A bird’s-eye view of the building the Bay Bridge
Photographer Peter Stackpole was just 21 years old when he was given a big break:
A man with a hammer in his hand decided to test the nerve of the young man who had a camera in his hand. “Hey kid, why don’t you come out with us? You’ll get some good pictures,” he said. So the kid jumped on a crew boat and rode out to the first tower, under construction […] By the time the kid came back down it was 1936, the bridge was completed, and he had a body of work that would outlast anything else he would do, including his sessions with Hollywood stars as one of the first staff photographers for Life.
