History Geek’s Note: 19th century gentlemen took their cravats very seriously. A cravat was a rectangle of fabric (size could vary but 12″ wide by 60″ long seems to have been a common size) which was wrapped in various ways around a gentleman’s neck to create styles with names like the “Mail Coach” or the “Mathematical”.
