“Do not cry, Pepito. Show these people that you are brave. It is a rare opportunity for me to die for our country. Not everybody is given that chance… Tell your mother, brother, and sisters not to grieve over my passing. Tell them that we shall be together again in the next life. From your strength, let them draw theirs. Teach them to be brave.”

Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos to his son Pepito before he was executed by the Japanese on 7 May 1942.

Jose Abad Santos (1886-1942) was the 5th Chief Justice of the Philippine’s Supreme Court. He briefly served as Acting President of the Commonwealth and Acting Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the early months of the Second World War in the Pacific. This duty he took on in behalf of President Quezon after the government went in exile to the United States. After about two months, Santos was killed by the Japanese forces for refusing to cooperate during their occupation of the country.

Today we commemorate his 132nd birth anniversary.

He is immortalized in the Philippine PhP 1,000.00 peso bank note together with Brigadier General Vicente Lim and Josefa Llanes Escoda.
