After a violent storm, the Little Mermaid rescues the prince from the ship and delivers him safely on land near a temple. She hides so that she is not seen.
The Little Mermaid waits until a young maiden finds the Prince on the beach and takes him back to the castle. Yet he never sees the Little Mermaid.
After learning from her grandmother that mermaids have no soul, the Little Mermaid pays a visit to the evil sea witch.
The witch sells her a drinking potion in exchange for her tongue. Once she becomes human, she can never come back to the sea and only if the Prince loves her she can have an eternal soul.
Once on land, the Little Mermaid meets the Prince. He is instantly attracted her beauty even though she cannot speak. She learns that each step she takes feels like swords running through her feet.
Despite the pain, the Little Mermaid continues to win his heart as she dances for him. All the while, the Prince cannot forget about the girl who saved him on the beach.
The Prince is then forced to marry the Princess of the neighboring kingdom. He says he cannot marry her, for he only loves the girl from the temple. The Princess, in fact, turns out to be that girl!
The Prince and Princess wed, much to the Little Mermaid's dismay. Soon after, the Little Mermaid's sisters offer her a knife to kill the prince. If his blood drip to her toes she'd be a mermaid again.
In the night, the Little Mermaid attempts to slay the Prince as he sleeps. However, she cannot bring herself to do it.
At dawn, the Little Mermaids goes back to the sea and turns into foam. But she's given an eternal soul and her spirit rises up to the kingdom of God.
