psych-facts:

They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time. - Banksy

Also touched upon in David Eagleman’s book, Sum. Except there were three deaths, the first is when your heart, lungs and brain stop; your physical death, the second is when your body decomposes into something that isn’t “you” anymore, and the third is when you are remembered in the living plane for the last time.

It was pretty interesting; after your first death, you stay in a room with many others, waiting for your third and final death. Naturally, you stay with a lot of historical figures and people that have memorials or other structures built in their memory. They’re usually quite miserable, since more often than not, they’re misremembered or remembered for things they’d rather not be remembered for (infamy, or the way they died).

But once you’ve had your third death, you move into a different room. No one knows what lies beyond because no one has ever come back from it. People usually  feel a bit of relief and disappointment once their third death happens, but it’s especially regrettable when you see two well-acquainted people completely miss each other, because it’s usually the last loved one left who holds on to the other’s memory.

kittay-cait:

The woman in the top photo is Carlee Soto, waiting to hear news about her sister, a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The woman in the second photo is Victoria Soto, Carlees sister. Soto was apparently pushing the children into a closet when she was confronted by Lanza. She put herself between the gunman and the children and that’s when she was tragically shot and killed. When she became aware there was a gunman in the school, she hid her first-graders in closets and cabinets, then told the shooter they were in the gym. He turned the gun on Soto, killing her, but none of her students were harmed.

You are a hero Victoria, and no one will ever forget the amazing thing you did for your students. Only the good die young, may you rest in peace. Such a beautiful soul.

A Bunch of Dads Singing Little Mermaid Because Having Daughters Made Them Memorize It

Says Patrick Quinn, co-creator of this video of dads (and some uncles) belting out “Part of Your World” because they all know the words so why not:

Once you have a daughter, no matter how tough, thuggish, or introverted you might be, you’re going to play princess with reckless abandon in front of others knowing that if anyone sees you they’re going to understand. Especially if that someone is another dad.

In the late 1880s, the body of a 16-year-old girl was pulled from the Seine. She was apparently a suicide, as her body showed no marks of violence, but her beauty and her enigmatic smile led a Paris pathologist to order a plaster death mask of her face.

In the romantic atmosphere of fin de siècle Europe the girl’s face became an ideal of feminine beauty. The protagonist of Rainer Maria Rilke’s 1910 novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge writes, “The mouleur, whose shop I pass every day, has hung two plaster masks beside his door. [One is] the face of the young drowned woman, which they took a cast of in the morgue, because it was beautiful, because it smiled, because it smiled so deceptively, as if it knew.”

Ironically, in 1958 the anonymous girl’s features were used to model the first-aid mannequin Rescue Annie, on which thousands of students have practiced CPR. Though the girl’s identity remains a mystery, her face, it’s said, has become “the most kissed face of all time.”

amandapalmer:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.‘ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”
